IWS was critical in guiding the project through the permitting process and delivering a solution for our wastewater needs that will protect the Edwards Aquifer and the surrounding community.

DESCRIPTION: Integrated Water Services, Inc. (IWS) has completed the first phase of its Design-Build MBR wastewater treatment project for The Grove at Vintage Oaks. This 440 home neighborhood is part of the upscale Vintage Oaks development located outside of San Antonio, Texas in New Braunfels. The first phase of the project will require treatment of up to 35,000 gallons per day of wastewater flow with final build out at 130,000 gallons per day. IWS was responsible for the design, permitting, construction, and start-up of the wastewater treatment system.
Vintage Oaks is a 3,900-acre master planned community in the heart of New Braunfels offering an array of Texas Hill Country land and homes. IWS worked with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to obtain a new TCEQ permit to authorize the disposal of treated domestic wastewater via surface irrigation of 40 acres of public access open areas with trails. Once the wastewater is treated it will be used for land application through spray irrigation for the beneficial use of growing Winter Rye and Alfalfa within the community.
The project site is located above the Edwards Aquifer, which is one of the most prolific artesian aquifers in the world and protected by the Edwards Aquifer Authority. The Edwards Aquifer is located on the eastern edge of the Edwards Plateau in Texas, and is the source of drinking water for two million people, and is the primary water supply for agriculture and industry in the aquifer’s region. IWS completed the permitting for the project and addressed all the environmental concerns from the various stakeholders in this environmentally sensitive area.
The turn-key wastewater treatment system included MBR treatment, UV disinfection, chemical feed system, back-up generator, lab building, and all electrical controls. IWS selected a packaged Ovivo microBLOX MBR system (www.ovivowater.com) to meet the re-use discharge requirements for the project. Once the wastewater is treated it is stored in a pond and used for irrigation of the crops.
Gretchen Howell of Southstar Communities commented that, “IWS did a great job for us from permitting, to construction, and start-up. IWS was critical in guiding the project through the permitting process and delivering a solution for our wastewater needs that will protect the Edwards Aquifer and the surrounding community.”
