Municipal Wastewater Infrastructure That Works Within Your Budget and Timeline

From aging plant upgrades to new treatment facilities, IWS provides wastewater solutions for small and mid-size communities that must meet modern permit standards without blowing their capital budgets. We focus on providing the technical foundation for municipalities: specialty engineering, technology supply, and performance optimization.

The Wastewater Challenges Municipalities Can't Afford to Ignore

Small and mid-size communities operate under the same regulatory requirements as large cities, with a fraction of the staff and funding.

Permit limits tighten. Infrastructure ages out. And when a replacement project comes in over budget, the project stalls and the community pays for it. IWS works with municipal utilities, sanitation districts, and water agencies to find the path from where the system is to where it needs to be, at a cost the community can actually sustain.

Engineering Flexibility for Public Sector Realities

Municipal projects operate under unique constraints, including procurement requirements and rate study pressures.

IWS offers a flexible engagement model to support your community’s goals:

  • Collaborative Support: We work alongside your on-site engineering team or third-party firms to provide specialized wastewater process design and technology integration.
  • Specialty Engineering: Our team can lead the technical design of treatment upgrades, focusing on “narrow authority” and mechanical reliability to ensure long-term compliance.
  • Construction Management: We manage the installation and commissioning of our advanced technologies, ensuring specialized equipment is integrated correctly into the site build.

Solving Common Wastewater Challenges for Municipalities

Aging Infrastructure and Tightening Permits

A 40-year-old plant can often be maintained until a permit renewal introduces limits it was never designed to meet. We provide an honest assessment of existing systems, identifying what can be retained and what requires modern technology.

Operational Continuity During Construction

Most small districts lack backup treatment capacity during construction. IWS builds phased construction plans that keep the existing facility online until the switchover is complete — a hard project requirement, not a courtesy.

Water Reuse and Drought Resilience

IWS has designed and built many Title 22 reuse systems, advanced water purification facilities, and zero-discharge configurations that direct treated effluent toward irrigation, groundwater recharge, or other beneficial uses.

Treatment Technology Built for Municipal Applications

We select the right approach based on your community's specific discharge requirements.

  • Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) Systems: Produces high-quality effluent in a smaller footprint than conventional activated sludge. IWS’s modular, scalable MBR lineup ranges from 2,500 GPD to millions of GPD, available for purchase, lease, or lease-to-own — giving smaller districts capital flexibility that traditional procurement doesn’t always allow.
  • Advanced Water Purification: For communities pursuing potable reuse or groundwater recharge, we provide multi-stage systems incorporating membrane filtration, and UV/advanced oxidation.
  • Jet Aeration and Mixing Systems: Through KLa Systems, an IWS company, we provide jet aeration technology for lagoon and activated sludge upgrades. This technology offers high-efficiency oxygen transfer with lower long-term maintenance than traditional bubble diffusers. More than 1,700 projects completed across 38 countries.
  • Automation and Controls: IWS designs and builds control systems in-house, including PLC/HMI programming, SCADA integration, and remote monitoring. Automated controls reduce the daily operator burden and flag process issues before they become permit violations.

Why Municipalities Choose IWS

Municipal projects run on trust and accountability to the ratepayer. IWS provides the technical reliability and advanced technology necessary to protect public health and community budgets.

We offer:

  • Full-Spectrum Project Support: Engineering, construction management, installation, and aftermarket service, handled by one team from start to finish.
  • Proven Municipal Experience: Since 2003, IWS has completed projects across wastewater treatment, water reclamation, and infrastructure upgrades for communities throughout North America.
  • Advanced Technology: Access to our full modular MBR lineup, KLa Systems jet aeration and mixing technology, and advanced automation and controls.
  • Flexible Engineering: Choose the level of support that fits your project, from supporting your existing engineers to full specialty design.
  • Rapid Emergency Response: When a public treatment system fails, the compliance window is critical. IWS responds quickly to restore operation and protect public health.
